Hell yes. Check this out. Bethesda Softworks is giving away "Daggerfall: the Elder Scrolls II" for FREE DOWNLOAD on their website. Holy crap.

Anyone who played this game as a kid will attest that it is one of the hardest games ever (besides Battletoads). It's one of those games that's so hard, that it actually gets boring because you just never win.

I got a used copy of this game for Christmas one year without the full instruction booklet and had absolutely no idea what was going on. The dungeons seemed to be constructed so that they never actually ended. You would spend HOURS exploring them for one ingredient for a potion or whatever. You'd finally reach what seemed like the bottom of the dungeon, and all of a sudden you would just die for no reason. Only when you checked your status menu would you realize that you had actually contacted typhoid fever from a zombie fight an hour previous and there was no way to cure it except at a doctor in town. You were SCREWED. If you were hardy enough, you'd start the dungeon all over again, and then you'd find out that if only you'd taken the right turn instead of the left at the first fork in the dungeon, you'd have discovered that the ingredient was right around the corner. DAMMIT!

Doug and I have discussed this game many a time, so much so that I was actually inspired to dig up my old copy of the game when I visited my family a few months ago. I couldn't even play it on my current computer because it's so old-school. By a stroke of luck my girlfriend had an incredibly out-dated laptop she had gotten for free. We've never used that laptop for anything but Daggerfall. But now, you can play it on ANY computer!

Bethesda just came out with a pretty awesome game this year called Fallout 3 (one of the reasons I bought a PS3), but it is not nearly as hard or customizable and freeform as this game.
